Your car has endured a lot this winter – especially if you live in an area where cold temperatures linger and road salt is all around. Now that the sun is coming out and temperatures are warming up, it’s time to shake off the winter shivers and get your vehicle ready for a bright summer by tackling some of these easy (but important) spring maintenance tasks.
Bath Time! Wash and Wax
All of the nasty grime and grit – especially road salt – that accumulates during winter months can wear down your vehicle during warmer months if you don’t take time to wash it off.
Whether you wash your car by hand or take it through an automatic wash, be sure to give your car a much-needed bath to scrub off the remains of winter. They might be easy to overlook, but pay special attention to the undercarriage and wheel wells, where road filth tends to accumulate.
After your car is clean, apply a thick coat of quality wax to provide an extra layer of protection and help shield the paint from intense summertime rays.
Check those Tires
If you put snow tires on your car for the winter, now is the time to switch them back to all-season tires that better handle the summer heat. Even if you plan to keep the same tires on your vehicle, you should still take a close look at your tires to check tread depth and look for signs of cracks or deformities.
Most tires should also be rotated every 6,000-8,000 miles. Come in for a tire rotation at your local Valvoline Instant Oil Change if it’s time!
Get Some Fresh Air
Your vehicle uses two filters to purify the air it takes in. The first kind is the cabin air filter, which cleans the air that enters the cabin through the vents of the climate control system. A contaminated cabin air filter can block fresh air from entering the car like it’s supposed to.
The other type of filter your car uses is the engine air filter. An engine requires fresh air to mix with fuel for the combustion process, so dirty air may cause excessive wear in your engine. The engine air filter blocks contaminants from entering the engine.
Both air filters should be replaced on your vehicle at least once every year. Spring is a great time to remove the old filters and give your car a breath of fresh air, and Valvoline Instant Oil Change is happy to help!
Is Your A/C OK?
Most of us have had enough of the chilly air, but you don’t want to wait until a sweltering summer day to find out your car’s air conditioning system isn’t working. Test the system now to make sure cold air is still blowing out through the vents at full force. If the air isn’t cold or the breeze isn’t strong when the A/C is cranked up, you’ll probably need to check your refrigerant or filter. Stop in at your local Valvoline Instant Oil Change for our air conditioning service to make sure your car is ready and you can stay cool all summer.
Take Time to Change Your Oil
Vehicles usually need oil changes 2-4 times a year to work their best, so a change of seasons is a great reminder that it might be time to get an oil change.
